A Christmas Miracle

This year we spent Christmas in Omaha, NE with my husband’s family.  While we were here, a blizzard hit the midwest.  The following chronicles our experience in the snow.

Day 1:  Snow on the ground, hear more snow is coming.  Take excited kids out to play in it, buy beer at grocery store.

Day 2:  Ice overnight, snow starts late morning.  Roads start to deteriorate, buy beer at nearby Walmart.  Brothers and sister-in-law arrive safely with large dog, bringing our Christmas Eve total to ten people and two dogs.  Family gets drunk and celebrates Christmas Eve while snow continues to fall.

Day 3:  Snowed in overnight.  Christmas day with extended family canceled as is church in the morning.  In-laws buy the children a karaoke machine for Christmas.  Regret not rationing beer better the night before.  Snow continues to fall.  Brother-in-law and severely pregnant sister-in-law attempt to leave and don’t make it out of the driveway.  Switch to Jack Daniels and watch a Christmas Story on the couch with nine other people and two dogs.  Family Christmas at its best.

Day 4:  Down to one case of beer.  Cabin fever sets in.  Men of the family go for it.  Get stuck in the snow about 30 yards in and have to push the jeep back.  Amy makes a desperate attempt to dig her way to the grocery store.

The newborn Jesus answers our prayers and a city plow comes through the neighborhood in the afternoon.  A Christmas Miracle!  The men make a second go at it and come back with 5 cases of beer, two bottles of wine, a bottle of Bailey’s, milk and propane.  Hunker down for the night with newly acquired supplies, and all is right with the world.

Wishing you a belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,
Amy

‘Round these here parts, we use butterscotch schnaaps with hot chocolate to make the snow easier to look at. Lots and lots of butterscotch schnaaps.

Oh how I miss those storms….and I’m guessing since it was Nebraska, the cases of beer could have quit possibly been Bud Light!!!

I hope you are fully stocked up again when we get there for the Bartlett Christmas in like 3 hours!

We have five cases and a fully stocked bar of the hard stuff. Worry not, cousin, we wouldn’t go into this good old fashioned family christmas unarmed! See you in a few!
