How I went from being a FB admin to “an individual exhibiting a chance and usually inferior biological variation.”

For reasons still not entirely clear to me (but I think they have something to do with gin) Kelly, the founder and talent behind Shoot Me Pretty, has put me in charge of the site’s blog and made me an administrator on the Facebook page.  The blog, whatever–I think I can bite my tongue and behave, but giving me admin privileges on the FB page?  Hummm…

The real founder of Shoot Me Pretty is professional, whereas I answer questions like “How did you take that shot?” with “wizardry.” We both post to the page, so as not to sully her good name with my idiocy, I write under the name “Rogue Shoot Me Pretty Admin Amy.”  My first major contribution as an admin has been to declare Friday as “Photoshop an animal with a vice day.”  Before I posted my new declaration, though, I decided to look up “rogue” to make sure I was spelling it right because my five-year-old can and does spell better than I do, and I made a shocking discovery.  According to Merriam Webster’s dictionary, I’ve been spelling “rogue” correctly but, like most things, it doesn’t mean what I thought it did:

Main Entry: 1rogue
Pronunciation: \ˈrōg\
Function: noun
Etymology: origin unknown
Date: 1561

1 : vagrant, tramp
2 : a dishonest or worthless person : scoundrel
3 : a mischievous person : scamp
4 : a horse inclined to shirk or misbehave

5 : an individual exhibiting a chance and usually inferior biological variation
–or, as an adjective–

Main Entry: 3rogue
Function: adjective
Date: 1872

1 : resembling or suggesting a rogue elephant especially in being isolated, aberrant, dangerous, or uncontrollable
2 : corrupt, dishonest <rogue cops>
3 : of or being a nation whose leaders defy international law or norms of international behavior <rogue states>
There are so many great ones to choose from, but I think my favorite is “resembling or suggesting a rogue elephant especially in being isolated, aberrant, dangerous, or uncontrollable,”  a phrase that is certainly going to appear on my resume from now on.

The site is still under construction, but for now you can look at Kelly’s pictures and my jackassery on the Facebook page.  If you live in the area, you should definitely hire us to shoot your kids and/or lemurs (with a camera, water gun, t-shirt canon, whatever).

In Canada we had “rogue” grizzly bears. They would go through our elementary school garbage dumpsters until some dude with a tranq gun would assist with their relocation. It is sad that the Canadian interpretation is not included in the dictionary definition. Such good memories…
